This is Me Being Sassy

8/23
I was in a hurry and my sister was taking my picture, so here, enjoy some of my big sister sass.

I hate my hair like this. I have a weird aversion to having my hair just straight and down, so I end up sticking in side clips. And I look like a dork! I need to come up with a better option. I used to wear headbands all the time, but they tend to make me look about fourteen.

This was my Easter dress from 2011, and it’s a miracle that the cheap boning hasn’t busted out of the top yet. I would just take it out, but I don’t want to mess with it unless I have to. But really, the boning in the princess seams curves in such a weird way that it makes my already impressive rack look at least a cup size bigger. DO NOT NEED.

I went with the sensible flat sandals today for two reasons- one, because I learned the hard way that one should not wear heels whilst teaching a class about movement. And two, because I wanted to show off my nail polish. I have an audition tonight, so I took off the dark raspberry nail polish on my fingers (OPI Katy Perry The One That Got Away) and replaced it with a different Katy Perry nail polish, Teenage Dream. But on my toes I layered the pink glitter over the raspberry, and gah it looks pretty!

I need to do a post about my new love of nail polish- of OPI polishes, specifically. They’re amazing.

Also, my sandals fasten with velcro. They’re size 4 1/2 in children’s. And they have iCarly on them.

Awkward Ballerina

8/22/12

Really, that’s the best description I have for this. Between the bun, the black top, and blush pink circle skirt, I feel like a ballerina. But awkward.

I love these shoes, but I discovered the hard way that they’re not conducive to excessive movement. I have to take very small steps, since there’s no strap to keep them on, and that makes it difficult to teach a lesson to my theatre arts students on movement! I was ten minutes into the lesson before I kicked them off. A glamorous grown up I am not.

This is actually the first time I’ve worn this skirt, mostly because I don’t know what to pair it with. It came in blush, black, and navy, and I bought the blush on a whim because I own too much black and navy. But now I don’t know how to style it! Any thoughts?

Also, my bun was all over the place. Lately I’ve been using that little mesh donut-y thing (let’s be honest, the sock bun with the actual sock is too advanced for my minimal hair-doing skills), but today I just sort of…slapped it up with bobby pins. And I didn’t realize until I got home that a big ol’ chunk of hair had fallen out in the back. Oh well.

I’ll just tell people I saw it on Pinterest.

Tuesday’s Ten: Seychelles

I have become obsessed with Seychelles. You have no clue. My feet are so small that I got in the habit of just buying shoes from the children’s department. Or clearance shoes from Charlotte Russe. Or, if I wanted to splurge, from Rack Room or Payless. Seychelles were just a dream, something to idolize on fashion blogs.

And then I stumbled across a pair of Seychelles at Ross, and in two months I purchased six pairs.

Oops.

Except I’m not sorry. They’re amazing.

So here’s ten more pairs of Seychelles I would totally buy right this second!

I already have the Seychelles Pansy in cream, but I want them in black too.

All right, so I want them in fuchsia too.

I love the combination of black and mint in the Seychelles Freesia.

The Seychelles All Dressed Up in black is such a classy shoe. And I love T-straps. Do I actually own any T-straps? I can’t remember. I think I have one pair…

If only I had found the Seychelles I Do before my wedding!

But I want to redo my whole wedding anyway.

That’s another story.

I would track down the Seychelles Slap On the Wrist in a heartbeat if I could know for sure that they would fit over my massive calves. I HAVE REALLY BIG CALVES, YOU GUYS.

I would wear the Seychelles Jumpin’ the broom all the time. All. The. Time.

August Birchbox: Back to School

This was a really interesting box! And as a brand-spankin’ new teacher, I was pretty excited that it was back-to-school themed.

Also, I need to learn how to take better pictures.

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream ($16, full size)

I almost didn’t see this tube in the box originally, just because it was so tiny! It’s just very fancy skin cream. And it smells like Vick’s VapoRub. It’s a thick, slippery sort of gel and sits on your skin for a while. I think it’ll be good for the winter when my skin’s all dried out- maybe a nice layer of it at nighttime would be good. But as for a lotion on a hot summer day- no bueno.

Miss Jessie’s Original Stretch Silkening Creme ($22, full size)

I have a love-hate relationship with this cream. It’s a really good-sized sample (plenty of uses out of it!), the texture is lovely, and it smells absolutely beautiful, but it just doesn’t do much for my curls. In fact, it takes my curls out completely. My hair has a natural loose curl to it, and the cream makes it so loose that it vanishes. It’s like my hair gets stoned, so it goes all limp and floppy and stuff. I like the product itself and how silky it makes my hair, but honestly, I’ll probably save it for the days that I straighten my hair.

Schick Hydro Silk Razor ($10)

This was the surprise product! Honestly, this razor saved my box from being pretty unhappy. (Also: I originally typed “shaved” instead of “saved.) I usually buy the mega-size packs of el cheapo razors from Target, since I shave pretty frequently, but I’m sort of in love with this razor. I tested it without using any shave gel, since I usually use it only about twice a year- it’s such a hassle! But even with just using water it was a really clean shave and felt super smooth- still felt smooth the next day, actually, which never happens to me. I have the hairy sexiness of a small sasquatch. I’ve tried razors with built-in conditioner bars before, but this is the first one that I’ve tried and really loved. Plus, the handle was easy for my toddler-sized hands to grip. I’ll probably keep an el cheapo razor in the shower for touch ups and daily shaving, but when I want to shave my legs I’ll keep this little beauty around.

Viva la Juicy La Fleur ($70, full size)

I’ve tried the normal Viva La Juicy before, and the best way I can describe it is, well…the bottom of an elderly lady’s purse. It smells like generic perfume and peppermints. Probably lint covered. Gross. The La Fleur is at least much better than that. It has a lighter, more floral-and berry scent, but still with the unsettling undertone of lint-covered peppermints. When it settles, it smells a little more like oranges, which then brings to mind the scent of bathroom air freshener. So…not so much a fan of this one. I mean, it’s not bad, and I’ll probably keep it in my desk at work, but when I want to pick a perfume, I’ll reach for my Harajuku collection.

Pixi Beauty Lip and Line in Pretty Peony ($18, full size)

This right here was my favorite item in the box. I’ve been wanting to try the Pixi line of products for ages, but it was too expensive to just pick up on a whim like my OPI polishes or Revlon lip butters (I try to keep my shopping splurges under $10). I think I’ve found a new favorite lip product, though. The wand has a liner in one side and a lipstick on the other, both in the same shades. Since they’re the same color, it doesn’t give that unsettlingly awkward look of “oh, it looks like I used a sharpie on my face” if the lipstick wears off. The liner spread really easily and the lipstick has a great crayon-like texture. It stayed on pretty well, too. The peony shade is a nice browny-pink that looks really nice with my skin tone, but if they have the same lip wand in red, I shall purchase it posthaste.

All in all, I think the two boxes I’ve received so far are a pretty good sampling- some things I love, some things I don’t love so much, and a lot of fun trying out new products. Plus, I’ve learned about some products that I really really like! The Schick razor is going onto my shopping list right now…

Apparently This is My Come Hither Face

8/21/12: Apparently This is My Come Hither Face

I need to learn how to make better facial expressions. And poses that don’t involve hands on my hips. I might have to start doing cliche fashion blogger poses, just so I can change things up.

I won this dress in a cutthroat eBay auction and I’m so glad I did! It’s so comfortable and adorable- although it hikes halfway up my thighs when I sit down. But it’s so cute, I don’t mind wearing it with tights!

Although, speaking of which, my husband didn’t realize I was wearing tights. He just thought I had oompa-loompa legs. Thanks, husband.

I was going to wear this with a pair of yellow espadrille sandals, but I just got this pair of Blowfish Hamish boots and really, really wanted to wear them. It’s probably weird to wear boots and tights with a summer dress, but eh. It made me happy and it was comfortable!

Twelve Shades of Yellow

8/20/12: Twelve Shades of Yellow

In my husband’s words: “well, at least it’s not fifty shades of gray!”

Yeah, the yellows don’t necessarily match. But this dress was super comfy, and really nice for a hot day like today! Plus I had to move around a whole bunch (today was all about movement and expression on stage), and since there’s a smocked back and no zipper, I was very comfortable. I need to take the straps in a little, though.

And my hair did not last down for very long. It was up in a ponytail by 7th period. Oh, well. This was my second time trying the Miss Jessie’s curl cream from my last Birchbox- this time I let my hair air dry with my usual leave in conditioner, touched up the curls with an iron, and finished with the curl cream. As you can see…nice waves. No curls. And like I said…in a ponytail by 7th period. I’ll give it a couple more tries, but I’ll probably just use it as a finishing cream, and I don’t think I’ll buy more.

My lip color was a better success! I used the Pixi lip liner/lipstick in Peony, and  I really liked it. It was a great texture and a pretty decent shade, considering I didn’t pick it out myself, and it lasted for a good part of the day. If they have the same product in a red, I might give that a try.

The One with My Least Favorite Disney Attraction

Rewind to the spring of 2006…

I was working at Disney World in Florida as a College Program cast member (specifically as a Great Movie Rider). I had never been to Disney’s Animal Kingdom before, so I went with a friend of mine.

We decided to go to the It’s Tough to be a Bug! attraction- it’s one of those sensory overload 3-D shows. Initially I was excited, because Bug’s Life is a good movie. As you can see from the photo, taken minutes before the show started, I seemed quite delighted. But I forgot a key issue.

I’m bugaphobic.

Well, specifically arachnophobic, but you know.

I thought I would be okay, but the show begins with a 3-D tarantula. I immediately screamed and yanked off my glasses. It was a cute, happy, smiley tarantula but still for the love of God it was a tarantula.

I put the glasses back on and thought I could get through the rest of the show, but then Hopper appeared, yapped about teaching the humans what it’s like to be a bug, and then shouted “BLACK WIDOWS ATTACK.”

Giant rubber spiders leaped down from the ceiling and danced around my head. I promptly screamed like a two-year-old tourist. Like literally, tears. Everywhere.

By the time the show was over and the seat underneath rumbled as the “bugs left the theater,” I was a sobbing, shaking mess.

My friend was mortified.

I had to go eat my body weight in ice cream afterwards.

Love in Gray and Yellow

Love in Gray and Yellow

I am so in love with the dress! It’s so comfortable and the fabric is so nice- a lot nicer than I usually expect from a Forever 21 dress. It’s super short and scoopnecked for work, but…well, I really wanted to wear it. Luckily, I wore this on Friday, which means jeans day at work, so I wore the dress with jeggings and called it a day. It was a little on the cool-ish side today too, so I added the gray cardigan.

I wore this for work (we did breathing, focus, and listening exercises today) and then straight to a get-together for a friend’s birthday. We had Texas barbecue (THAT CHICKEN WAS THE SIZE OF MY HEAD OH MY GOD) and then wandered merrily around Whole Foods. P and I came home with chocolate milk, black cherry cream soda, and biscoff spread. YAY SUGAR!
I tried out one of my new Birchbox products, the Miss Jessie’s curl cream. I put it in my hair while it was still wet, and it stayed loosely wavy for about two hours, but by the time I got home there was barely any wave left at all. Which is weird for me, because my hair is usually massively wavy. But maybe I just need to change my approach.
Also, these Blowfish Aerins are still amazing. I adore them. If my Seychelles Romance boots are my fancyboots, these are my sassyboots.

The Curious Case of the Clown Shoes

8/16/12: The Curious Case of Clown ShoesI

I love these shoes. They’re comfy and quirky and I purchased them for $7.49 about two years ago.

They make me look like I have clown feet.

Do I care?

No, not particularly.

I originally was going to wear a different outfit today, but I liked that outfit so much that I decided to save it for Friday, since I’m going to a party after work. It was also a wee bit rainy today, so flats were definitely in order.

(Also, in case you were curious, I wear anywhere from a size 4 1/2 in children’s to a 6 1/2 in women’s. And because I have massive ex-cheerleader calves, I often go up to a 7 in boots.)

I also forgot that this top needs a cami underneath it. I was attempting to straighten my hair when I raised my arm and saw the entire band of my bra. Now, while some people might embrace this as a sartorial choice, I really don’t want my fifteen high school students to know that their teacher was wearing a blue and yellow polka dot bra today. So cami it was.

Also, this is as straight as my hair gets. And by the end of the day, it was downright wavy. Oy.

Fancyboots

8/15/12 Outfit: Fancyboots

This conversation occurred as I was getting dressed this morning.

Me:: I’m going to wear my fancy boots today.

Sister: ….

Me: Someday I’m going to start a band and called it Fancyboots.

Of course, my sister reminded me that my band ought to be called Kissyboots, but you know.

These boots are amazing. Too bad I don’t know how to pose properly to show them off. They’re the Seychelles Romance boots in mushroom, and I am in love. The first time I wore them they rubbed a bit against the backs of my calves, but today they were perfect. They’re a little big- I went up a size like I usually do with boots, just because my giant calves have a tendency to interfere with normal boot-wearing- but nothing some thick socks can’t help with. Alas, they’re not very practical for crossing the road and steep driveway that divides my school’s campus, but it’s okay. My legs are short; I’m used to walking slow.

I have a crap-ton of Modcloth dresses, but this one probably gets the most wear. It’s super comfortable. I bought in their Labor Day sale back in 2010 and never regretted it. I mean, not that I ever regret Modcloth purchases- my bank account might, but I never do.
