Outfit of the Day: Today I Look Like Annie Oakley

8/13/12 Outfit: Today I Look Like Annie Oakley

I specifically asked my sister if I looked like a cowgirl. She said no.

I got home and the first words out of my mom’s were “yee-haw, Annie Oakley!”

Conclusion: I did indeed look like a cowgirl today.

I wore this for the first day of the creativity and concentration focus week. I want my theatre arts students to be comfortable around each other and comfortable with being over-the-top creative before we start working on improv, so we played telephone pictionary. It went so well! The kids all really liked it. I forsee it being a popular choice on free days.

Outfit of the Day: The Hiccup Necklace No One Can See

8/10/12 Outfit: The Hiccup Necklace that No One Can See

I was so excited because I finally got to wear my adorable kitten necklace AND YOU CAN’T EVEN SEE IT. It’s twisted around. GAH. This is me being frustrated. The necklace is precious- I bought it primarily because it looks like my little cat, Hiccup.

Oh, well. I’ll just have to wear it again. Such a hardship.

This outfit is super comfy, which is good because I had to bounce around a lot orchestrating a game of theatre history jeopardy. I also learned today that it’s a good idea that I never became a math teacher.

I also did a Bad Thing. I peeled off my nail polish instead of removing it properly. It’s not…it’s not that bad, right?

Outfit of the Day: I Look Like a Student

Outfit of the Day 8/9/12: Oops, I Look Like a Student

I keep trying to dress like a grown up and FAILING MISERABLY. I felt so mature when I got to work, and one of my students said “aw, Mrs. T, you look like a Catholic schoolgirl!” SEE? EPIC FAILURE.

But I really like this outfit, so oh well. Besides, between my diminutive stature and my round hamster cheeks, I will perpetually look like a fifteen-year-old. I might as well just give up trying to look older and just try to look nice.

These boots are probably my favorite things I’ve found on eBay- brand new Blowfish Aerins, in my size, for only $9.90 and free shipping. NO REGRETS, JUST AWESOME BOOTS. They’re my first pair of Blowfishes, and I adore them. I might be a lifelong convert.

I wore this to teach the last day of my introductory crash course in theatre history- musical theatre! I opened with an activity where they had to decide by the written one-sentence synopsis if it was a musical or not. They were all musicals! Their reaction to The Producers was especially hilarious. “There’s a musical about Hitler?!”

Yes, my children. Yes, indeed.

I also used the Staniac lip and cheek stain from my July Birchbox. Blush always makes me uneasy- 22 years in theater has conditioned me to apply way too much. I think this worked, though! I had just enough of a rosy flush, and it was pretty easy to apply, albeit a little messy. Any more, though, and I would have looked like an escapee china doll.

Also, I really wish I had been told to fix my cardigan. I have a bad case of awkward boob.

Outfit of the Day: Wherein I Am Lazy

8/8/12 Outfit: I am Lazy

I started off this school year thinking I was going to dress myself like a grown up. I was so excited! My chance to be an adult! New grown up clothes and heels and fancy makeup!

What do I wear after a week of school? A three-year-old dress and hot pink flats. Oh, well. I didn’t really feel like trying hard to day. I at least put my hair up in a fancy bun in an attempt to look older. I don’t think it worked. Bubblegum pink isn’t exactly a grown-up color. And wearing flats when you’re 4’11 3/4″ only makes you look shorter.

But oh well!

Book Reviews: Belly Laughs

Belly Laughs: The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and ChildbirthBelly Laughs: The Naked Truth About Pregnancy and Childbirth by Jenny McCarthy
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I read this on a whim. It seemed interesting- but it turned out to be more TMI than just interesting! There wasn’t a lot of super practical advice, more like anecdotes about all the gross things about pregnancy. Which, I mean, I would rather read an honest portrayal of pregnancy than “everything was roses and rainbows and soft kitties and my precious angelpants baby was bestowed on me in a shower of daisies,” but still. I can’t really tell you one entertainment-related thing that I knew Jenny McCarthy from before reading this book, but I can tell you a great deal about her pooping history.

July Birchbox: The Senses

I was SO EXCITED to get my first Birchbox ahead of schedule! Like literally, squealing and flapping my hands. It was insane.

And when I finally sat down to open it, it was like Christmas! The box was a lot smaller than I thought it would be, but it was awesome nonetheless.

Larabar Uberbar in Nut Roll ($9 for a box of 5)

I made myself start eating Larabars when I wanted to start eating healthier- I’m not a huge nut fan. I gradually came around to them and buy them pretty regularly. I didn’t know about the Uberbars, and I’ll probably try the other flavors. Bananas Foster sounds pretty good!

theBalm Cosmetics Staniac in Beauty Queen ($17, full size)

I’ve wanted to try a cheek stain for a while, so I was really excited about this one- probably my favorite item in the box! It works really well and blends right into my normal makeup routine. I haven’t tried it for lips yet, so I’ll have to give that a shot.

dirt. Luxe Salt Scrub in Lemon Leaf ($45, full size)

Oh lordy. This ties with the cheek stain was my favorite item. It smells absolutely amazing! I kept opening it up just to smell at it. It’s a very small amount, so I’m saving it for a nice pampering spa day, but it’s awesome.

Harvey Prince Eau Flirt ($98 for 100 mL)

This is a super fun scent! It says it has a base of lavender and pumpkin, with notes of fresh citrus and jasmine. But do you know what? I have no clue what that means. I just know if something smells pretty. And this is pretty! It does have a strong scent of lavender, but it has a warm, almost earthy tone. I like it, but for $98 for 100 mL, that is just way too much. I’ll stick to my $10 Harajuku bottles from Ross.

Ada Cosmetics Bronzer ($12.45, full size)

I’m not too much of a bronzer person- too many cringe-inducing memories of looking like an Oompa Loompa as a high school sophomore. This is a really nice one, though- it’s more of a slight warm gold shimmer than a Snooki orange. I probably won’t buy the full size, but it’s nice to have in my makeup box for casual summery days.

Birchbox Exclusive Earbuds

So cute! They match my iPod, which is good because I need things to match like that, and I can always use another pair. I keep a pair in my school bag and a pair in my workout bag, plus there’s usually another pair or so floating around the house. And at least now I’ll always know which pair is mine.

Overall

I thought it was pretty good for my first box! I’m looking forward to the next one- I already got an email saying it shipped. Yay! Part of me wants to snoop on other blogs to see what they’re getting for the August box…

Hearts and Rainbows

8/7/12 Outfit: Hearts and Rainbows

I bought this dress a year ago when I first started working at my school! Today I wore it to teach about Shakespeare. Probably too much levity for the great Bard, but maybe he’d appreciate the fact that I accidentally matched the heart on my belt with the hearts on my sunglasses.

Or maybe not. He would probably declare me a brass-as-buttons wench for showing my bare gams. Or something like that.

Also, my hair is a hot mess. My bangs need trimmed, the length needs layers, and I really hate how the color turned out. It’s Garnier Nutrisse Pomegranate (True Red). It turned out more like…maroon on me. It’s been a week and the color has settled a bit, but it’s still just…way too…I don’t know.

I just want glorious copper locks. What dye will give me glorious copper locks?

they’re really trusting me with their child’s education?

So I’m a teacher now.

And it’s slightly terrifying.

I don’t have a degree in education. I don’t have years of training and experience. I’ve been working in a school for a year and a half and that’s about it. Well, it helps that I’m teaching theatre arts. I’ve been in theatre for ages. So that helps. But still. Terrifying.

I STILL NEED TO GET MY POWERPOINTS READY. AND PRINT OUT MY HANDOUTS. AND PREPARE THE GAME FOR FRIDAY. AND PLAN NEXT WEEK’S LESSONS. OH GOD I’M GOING SCREW EVERYTHING UP, AREN’T I?

The Beetlejuice Dress

8/6/12 Outfit: The Beetlejuice Dress

My sister saw this outfit and immediately christened it the Beetlejuice dress. She’s insisting that I dress it up for Halloween. The jury’s still out on that- I kind of have my heart set on being Merida from Brave this year.

I tried this dress on in Forever 21, waffled about it, put it back, and came back a few weeks later to get it. Lo and behold, it was sold out. And then I found it again on eBay, new with tags, for about half price! I was on that.

I wore this outfit to teach my first official theatre arts class- we’re doing a crash course in theatre history this week. I felt so important and grown up in my makeup and fancy shoes…and was immediately mistaken for a high schooler.

Such is my life.
