Tuesday’s Ten: Why I Blog My Outfits

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and thought it would be an interesting topic for a Tuesday’s Ten! (Or at least not completely boring. Maybe? Maybe.)

Anyways, fashion blogging is such a weird thing. Ten years ago, I seriously doubt there were many people making entire internet journals devoted to their wardrobe, and now it’s still a really odd concept that people can blog about what they wore to the grocery store and somehow get invited to New York Fashion Week. I mean, not a bad thing at all, but…when you stop and analyze it, it’s like “…whoa.”

So why am I blogging about my outfits? I’m sure you’ve figured out by now that I will never be invited to New York Fashion Week (or asked to become a photographer, because that’s clearly not one of my gifts in life), so why do I do it?

#1: It’s a Self Esteem Thing

I am, um, not known for feeling good about myself. Ever. Most of the time I still feel like the kid I was in high school- dumpy, shapeless, frizzy-headed, bespectacled, poorly dressed. I wore a lot of tight tee shirts and jeans that were too long, but too tight across the butt. And in college I was still tremendously awkward, since I chose to dress in baby doll tops that made me look super pregnant. (Did I mention I’ve always been overweight? Because yeah. I’ve always been overweight. I was at my heaviest as a college freshman, and man, it was bad. At that point, I was about sixty pounds over my ideal, doctor-recommended weight.)

Taking pictures of my outfits has helped me feel like…well, like I’m not as dorky as I used to be. I’ll always be nerdy and socially awkward, but at least I can look at myself in the mirror and not cringe. I know how I look, and it makes me feel confident about sending myself out in the world.

#2: I Can Figure Out if I Look Like a Weirdo

Again…I’ve never been good about all of this dressing nicely thing. I have a tendency to pair up really weird things and wear it several times, thinking it’s awesome until one day I catch a glimpse of it and think “holy crap, I left the house in this?!” Taking a picture helps me see if I look like a doofus, and not just when I stand in front of a mirror facing in just one direction with my stomach sucked in. Pictures are a lot more honest.

#3: It Motivates Me to Dress Better

Because some days I want throw my hands up in the air and wear an ill-fitting old knit dress with broken down ballet flats and my hair in an unkempt ponytail. And then I tell myself “self, no. You are better than a cheap knit dress with pilling under the armpits and ballet flats you purchased in 2006. You can do better than this, and you deserve to do better.”

#4: I Actually Wear Makeup Now

I never wore makeup in college. When I started working at the bridal shop, I would sigh and make myself put on moisturizer, concealer, chapstick, and mascara. And that was it. I just…didn’t care.

Now I wear makeup not because I feel like I have something to hide, but because it’s fun for me. I like getting dolled up, and it’s more fun to do it every day than to just save it for a rare special occasion.

#5: It Helps Me Remember Cool Outfits

Do you ever come up with a cool outfit, and really like it, and then forget about what you actually wore? Now I won’t forget! And I won’t forget and rewear that same outfit every Tuesday for a month.

(When I was in middle school, I wore the same pair of overalls to every Bible quiz meet I attended. Some people thought those were the only pants I owned. I was just trying to be a hip kid of the late ’90s, like one of those nifty Babysitters Club girls. Claudia and Stacey wore overalls, right?)

#6: It Reminds Me to Be Grateful

One of the follies of reading fashion blogs is envy. It’s easy to read about bloggers with immense wardrobes, free outfits from fancy brands, invitations to parties, all that sort of thing. I must admit that when I first started reading fashion blogs I would gaze wistfully at their exquisitely put-together outfits and yearn for a closet filled with marvelous clothes and a veritable Noah’s Ark of shoes. But you know what? It doesn’t matter. I have lots of fun clothes and shoes, and while I might not shop exclusively at Nordstrom and Anthropologie, I like what I wear, and I’m lucky that I have what I have.

#7: I Need to Practice Taking Pictures

Have you seen my Facebook photos? I look like one giant derp. I mean, I try to smile all pretty and stuff and then I end up looking like this:

#8: I’m Starting to Develop a Style (Kind Of)

Remember when I said I was awkward in high school? Yeah. I wore a uniform for most of high school, so my weekend clothes were pretty whatever. And my senior year school had a strict dress code, so khakis and ill-fitting polos it was. When I got into college, I started off with graphic tee shirts (usually with cartoon characters on them, worn unironically) and jeans that were a mile too long. Later that became too-short baby doll dress, leggings, and ballet flats (read: I dressed like a toddler).

I still wear dresses 95% of the time, but I don’t feel like a toddler quite so much. (Okay, so maybe I should stop trying to make the saddle shoes work attire, but still.) I dress kind of like Rachel Berry from Glee, but do you know what? I like what I’m wearing, I know what styles I gravitate towards, and I’m getting better at dressing my body type. I call that a win.

(although seriously, I am one bad animal sweater away from becoming Rachel Berry).

#9: It’s Helping Me Socialize

Blogging my outfits and posting them to Flickr groups gives me a chance to push past my social anxiety and talk to people. And when I go out in public, I have something to talk about. Someone asks where I got my nifty teal shoes and bam, conversation starter. I might clam up in social settings or start babbling helplessly, but ask me about my nail polish and I’m like “yay, I can handle this!”

#10: It’s Fun

Seriously. It’s fun. I’m having a jolly time.

Sunshine

9/25/12

I figured I had better wear these shoes while I still could! Tennessee gets so unpredictable about its weather- it might be sunny and warm and 80 degrees today, and freezing cold the next. And these shoes are so stinkin’ cute. I bought them in the Modcloth 70% sale, which is basically my favorite time of the year ever. These shoes were originally $32.99, and I got them for $8.99! Which is lovely and exciting.

This was a weird, laidback sort of week, since the kids are off Thursday and Friday while the teachers are at an educator’s conference, so we’re just taking a few days to play around with accents and character voices. I made them watch clips of my favorite voice actors and it was awesome!

Teal the Cows Come Home

9/25/12

That’s the name of my nail polish, and it’s so cute that I couldn’t resist.

This skirt reminds me of a hot air balloon. And it’s so comfy! And poofy! I love it.

I actually didn’t wear this outfit for very long today. I worked in the library and taught theatre arts (day 2 of voice acting- we talked about accents!), and then I changed into shorts and a tee shirt for rehearsal. P and I were going to move some furniture after work, but that didn’t pan out. I still looked decently cute, though! I think!

The Panem Bobbysoxer

9/21/12

I don’t…I don’t even know what this outfit is. I didn’t have to teach today- I just had to shelve books and do Narnia rehearsal- so I just wanted to be comfortable. And….I was. Which balanced out the fact that I was wearing a miniskirt, cropped leggings, and saddle shoes. I look about ten.

I also put my hair in a sideways inside-out french braid. The Katniss braid. And so…I stuck my Mockingjay pin in my hair. So yeah. I’m the 1950s version of Katniss. I guess. I don’t know.

In any case, after work I made my dad’s birthday cake- milk chocolate chocolate chip cake with a whipped cream/cream cheese frosting. So. Good. OMG.

So Vain

9/20/12

This outfit makes me so happy for a simple, silly, vain reason- I look so skinny! I’ve been slowly losing weight, and this outfit highlights how much I’ve lost, and it makes me so excited.

I feel very punky in this outfit. Not that I’m really hardcore or a punk, but…it’s a slightly edgier outfit than I usually wear. And by that I mean it’s not pink or fluffy or pastel-y. If that’s a word. I don’t think it is.

I had a fantastic Narnia rehearsal with my kids today! I’m so proud of them. They’re all just adorable and awesome. But I’m looking forward to the weekend like you wouldn’t believe! I need a nap like whoa.

Pajama Day

9/19/12

It’s starting to get chilly in Nashville! Well, not really chilly per se, but we’re in that weird stage of fall weather where it might be hot! It might be cold! It might rain! You just don’t know! So I’m wearing a big old cardigan and boots with a skirt and bare legs.

I probably needed to dress more like an adult than wearing hobbit boots and a side ponytail, but I’ve pretty much given up on that. I just want to look decent, feel good in what I’m wearing, and be comfy. And this one fits all those requirements! So I’m happy.

Black and Pink

9/18/12

This outfit changed just a little bit- the black skirt I was going to wear was too big! Not that I mind that too much, but still. Couldn’t wear it. I ended up wearing the sweater over a black dress instead, and really liked it, especially with the collar peeking out. But the sweater was still really slouchy without being tucked in, so I belted it. And I think it turned out pretty cute after all!

I wore this for a very stressful day- I subbed for fifth grade, shelved books for a few hours, taught theatre arts (more voice and diction), and then had to do Narnia rehearsal and afterschool care at the same time. I WAS GOING TO DIE. So I went home and ate ice cream.

The Compliments Outfit

9/17/12

I don’t know if I was just around super nice people today or what, but I got a ton of compliments on this outfit! I was pretty excited. It’s not a typical outfit for me- I usually don’t do dresses with narrow skirts- but it was comfy and I felt cute and it was the perfect thing to cheer up a dreary rainy day- even if my belt and boots were different shades of brown. Oh, well. YOLO and whatnot.

I love the combination of navy and gold, and these mustard-y tights went really well with the dress, I thought. Although every time I wear them, my sister mistakes it for my actual skin color. She insists it’s because of the Great Legwarmer Tan of ’09.

I wore this for a long day of subbing for fifth grade, rummaging around my sad little library, teaching voice and diction in theatre arts (we did tongue twisters!), aftercare, and a Monday night church service. But I felt cute the whole time- even though my hair exploded in wild rain-curls and I had to pin it up for Emanate. It was still kind of cute!

Boots, Glorious Boots!

9/14/12
I have been searching for knee-high brown boots for forever! Like…two or three years! And now I have them!! Hurray!! I just had so much trouble finding boots that would fit over my massive cheerleader calves. These just baaaarely fit, so no thick tights for these, I think, but I love them so much.

This outfit is probably just a little too much on the autumnish side, but I don’t care! YOLO! And…so on and so forth. I’ve been going nuts on Pinterest with pumpkin-related things…although I realized I’ve never actually had a pumpkin spice latte. What’s up with that?

I wore this for the last day of nonverbal improv week, and rehearsal with my kiddos. This was my first day working with the kids playing the bad guys, and it was so much fun. They’re just awesome.

I also tried the waterfall braid in my hair again. The first time was an epic fail, but I think this one went better. Although I can’t get a good look at the back of my head, so I don’t know if it actually worked.

But yeah. This was a pretty comfy outfit, even though it kind of makes me look like I stuffed cantaloupes down my dress.

I decided to try something new with my hair It was pretty simple, just a sideways French braid with the ends pinned under, But…I don’t know. It didn’t seem terribly me. By the time rehearsal rolled around, I’d undone it and plopped it up in a frizzy ponytail. And somehow, sadly, that seemed to suit me better.

This outfit was mostly built around the shoes. Do you know how hard it can be to wear purple shoes? Surprisingly, with my wardrobe, it is. So I have to be crafty.

I wore this for another day of teaching nonverbal improv and rehearsing with my kiddos! Today I had them play a game I call Zombie Apocalypse. I moved all of the furniture to the sides of the room, blindfolded all of my students, and picked one to be the zombie. Then they had to shamble across the room, and when the zombie grabbed someone else, that person had to scream the most dramatic scream they could and try to infect someone else. The winner was the last person to not be infected. Needless to say, it was pretty awesome.

I also wore my Kurt necklace to celebrate the return of Glee! It’s such a crappy show but I can’t quit it. I love Kurt/Chris Colfer too much. And they don’t actually make much in the way of Kurt-related show merchandise (although I have a Dalton shirt, a Kurt shirt from Forever 21, a pink Glee shirt, and a messenger bag), so I had this made at one of those little kiosks in the mall. It’s super cute.

I just hope Glee doesn’t disappoint me!
