Outfit of the Day: 20 Shades of Poorly Planned Pink

You know how I said that I tend to dress like crap when I’m not careful? Well, this is an example of me dressing poorly.

And also standing poorly.

And also smiling poorly (to wit: not smiling at all).

And also I am wearing a super cute pink flower in my hair and you can’t see it in either picture.

But now that I’m looking at the picture, the skirt hangs awkwardly on me, and the belt would look better if it was wider (I think), and the shoes are NOT GOOD. Holy hot pink, Batman. Does not match at all. And my lips don’t blend well either. There’s like 20 shades of poorly planned pink going on here, and it needs to stop.

So this is pretty much a fail, all the way around. I at least like the way my eye turned out, though!

I’ve gotten some super awesome advice, though, and I’d love to hear any tip you might have for me, makeup or clothes or hair wise! I’m seriously struggling, y’all.

Also, someone needs to teach me how to smile….

Outfit of the Day: I Dress Like a Kindergartener and a Grandma at the Same Time

I have a really bad habit of dressing like crap. Like, I just…I don’t know. It’s almost the end of the school year and I’ve practically given up on life. So I’m using this blog to motivate myself. Effective? Hopefully. I want to look nice. And look my age. But unfortunately, this is definitely not a look for a grown up. Dammit. I need to work on that.

You’d think that combining saddle shoes and a dress Rachel Berry wore on the first season of Glee would be a good indicator that I’m not dressing my age…

Molly Hooper

11/26/12
My students decided that they wanted to dress up like fun things this week, and they picked today was Sherlock Day. My contribution was a measly attempt at Molly Hooper- a cardigan reminiscent of a lab coat and a ponytail.

At least they seemed happy!

And speaking of my students, that’s where I’ve been for the past month! I just finished a production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and boy, is my brain broken. It was a fantastic experience and my kids did a wonderful job, but it ate up all of my time. But now I have some time to breathe, and I can get back to doing things other than costume fittings and fight choreography rehearsals. It was a great idea to schedule the play right before Thanksgiving, because it gave me plenty of time to relax over the break. I literally spent my entire vacation (since I didn’t have access to the car) sitting around and writing. Marvelous!

But anyways…

I absolutely love this dress! One of my favorite bloggers had a clean-out-my-closet sale, and I snapped this one up immediately. It still had the tags on and everything! I’m looking forward to wearing it in the summer without a cardi or tights, but I couldn’t help but wear it now.

Rachel Berry Called, She Wants Her Sweater Back

10/26/12
Seriously, this looks like an outfit that Rachel Berry wore in the first season of Glee. Slightly ridiculous. At least the boots keep it from looking too sweety-sweet, right? If I really wanted to look like Rachel, I should have added mary janes or something.

The sweater was a serendipitous Goodwill find- an Izod sweater, tags still on, perfect condition. And unlike most sweaters, it doesn’t make my boobs look super awkward massive! My mom used to buy me chunky turtleneck sweaters and shirts every Christmas when I was growing up, in order to cover up my burgeoning cleavage. Yeah, thanks, Mom, that just made my boobs look even bigger and lumpier, especially since she also bought me ill-fitting sports bras that made me sag like a geriatric bingo player! My middle school/early high school photos are tremendously unfortunate, especially when coupled with my unattractive poofy haircut.

I wore this outfit for a long, long, LONG day. I got to work at 8:30 for a meeting about the TACS fine arts competition- I’m coaching a bunch of students to compete in monologues and duet scenes. And then I sewed a butt-ton of costumes. Then I met with two students at lunchtime about Narnia things. Then I sewed. Then my theatre arts kids finished their reader’s theatre presentations (they did a series of David Ives one acts.) Then I had Narnia rehearsal, in which I choreographed the battle sequence. Holy crap are my legs bruised now. Lots of rolling around on the floor and smacking people with fake weaponry. Let me just say that the boots were exchanged for a pair of hot pink Converses pretty quickly.

The white string/red ribbon bracelet is from a student. One of his friends recently committed suicide, and he was asking if people wanted the bracelets- as a memorial, as an anti-bullying symbol, and as a reminder that the wearer is loved, since one of the things his friend had said was that she didn’t feel loved. I’ve been wearing the bracelet daily ever since, and I’ll probably wear it till it falls off. I’ve watched a lot of my sweet kiddos get picked on and torn down, and I’m not okay with it. I’ve tried to make my classroom as welcoming as possible as a safe space, and some of them have really taken to it.

The 8th Von Trapp

Untitled

I am a SUCKER for anything with a sailor collar. I don’t even know why. I think it has something to do with my childhood obsession with my American Girl Samantha doll and my yearning for the my-size copy of her summer middy dress. But in any case, I love this dress.

Originally I came across this dress in the Memorial Day clearance sale. It was at least 50% off and I got super excited, but all they had left was a size small. I’m rather big of boob, so I always buy a size large in Forever 21 to accommodate the bazoombas and then take in the waist from there. So there was no way a small was going to fit. I mean, seriously. Snowball’s chance in hell. So I let it go.

Imagine my delight when it turned up in my size on eBay! I sniped that baby at the last minute and have treasured it ever since. It’s a wee bit on the short side, but I don’t even care. It’s so cute and so comfy.

I wore this for Narnia rehearsal- we’ve been trying to run act two and it is a HOT MESS. Well, actually, it’s not that bad, but my kiddos won’t focus and they get super silly, and it’s not as tight and clean as act one is. We’ll get there, though. They’re sweet kids and they work really hard when they set their mind to it, so hopefully it’ll all turn out.

Rachel-Minnie Berrymouse

10/16/12
My students debated about whether I looked more like Minnie Mouse or Rachel Berry. At least they think it’s cute.

I didn’t wash my hair today. And I went out in public. THIS NEVER HAPPENS. I am a compulsive hair-washer. I keep reading things about how it’s bad for your hair, it strips it of natural oils, you need to use non-sulfate based shampoos…and I’ll go like half a day before being like “OH GOD I’M SO GROSS SOMEONE HAND ME THE HERBAL ESSENCES.” I only shampoo the top of my head and condition the rest, but still. I think this is the first time in my life that I’ve voluntarily left the house with my hair unwashed.

I did use dry shampoo, though. Which I’m still a little leery of. But it made me feel better, so okay!

Today was the first day that my adorable flock of actors ran through Act I of Narnia all the way through. It took nearly two hours, but for our first real run-through, it went really well! They’re all very inexperienced, but they all work really hard and I’m proud of them.

Also, this dress makes my boobs look way too big and there’s literally nothing I can do about that.

Little Mermaid Hair!

10/15/12

So you can’t see a lot of details of my outfit because the sun is stupid and I am a terrible photographer, but who cares because Ariel hair!

My sister’s best friend is in beauty school, so she came over to cut and color our hair. I hadn’t dyed my hair since August (and it had turned out the wrong color anyway) and it hadn’t been cut since April, so it definitely needed a little love! I am so thrilled with the color, and my students kept exclaiming over how pretty it looks.

I love this dress, but it’s one of the perils of buying thrifted clothing online- it was listed as a large when it’s a small! So I have to leave it unbuttoned. But hey, still, cute, right? Right? Oh well.

Also my knee socks were a dollar at the end-of-winter sales at Claire’s, and they’re sparkly. AWESOME.

It was a great outfit for a long, long day. My friend Meg was in town from Pennsylvania, so we went out for breakfast before I took her to the airport. And then it was my first day back at school after fall break, so my kids did NOT want to do anything and I didn’t really push it. They have a paper due tomorrow for me, and only one of them turned it in! Silly children. And then I had three-hour Narnia rehearsal, where I still had four main actors missing. And then I had Emanate. So long day, but really good!
