Black and Pink

9/18/12

This outfit changed just a little bit- the black skirt I was going to wear was too big! Not that I mind that too much, but still. Couldn’t wear it. I ended up wearing the sweater over a black dress instead, and really liked it, especially with the collar peeking out. But the sweater was still really slouchy without being tucked in, so I belted it. And I think it turned out pretty cute after all!

I wore this for a very stressful day- I subbed for fifth grade, shelved books for a few hours, taught theatre arts (more voice and diction), and then had to do Narnia rehearsal and afterschool care at the same time. I WAS GOING TO DIE. So I went home and ate ice cream.

Evelyn Carnahan

9/11/12
The best way I can describe this outfit: I look like the librarian from The Mummy. Or Indiana Jones’ kid sister.

In either case, I am the most awkward picture taker ever. I need to branch out with some new poses. I’m going to make this my goal. I’m going to do all the cliche fashion blogger poses just so I can get myself to stop posing with my hands on my hips.

Also, somehow I managed to stand in the only shaded part of the porch. Not only am I bad at taking pictures, I’m really good at being bad at taking pictures. I got mad skillz, yo.

This blouse isn’t my usual style- it’s sheer and kind of frou-frou-y and stuff- but I really like it. It has kind of a ’70s vibe, which isn’t really me, so I played around with it and ended up in this historical-adventurer sort of outfit. And I really liked it.

Even though the socks turned my feet violently red. Like, seriously. It was like I had stepped in tomatoes.

I wore this for the first day of Narnia rehearsals with my students! This is my first full-length play that I’ve directed all on my lonesome, but I’ve got a fantastic cast and crew of kids who are really dying to work hard and learn a lot. Today I worked just with the kids playing the Pevensies, and I’m so excited so far. this is going to be a fun show, I just know it.

I also started nonverbal improv with my theatre arts students. Today was all about communicating and reacting without saying anything, so we played two games- the floor is lava, and air traffic controller. For the first one, I picked two students to be the “movers”- they were immune to the lava and could move furniture around to help their classmates across (although on the second go-round, I told them they weren’t allowed to use any of the metal chairs, making them have to get creative). For air traffic controller, I blindfolded one student (the “airplane”) and assigned them a student to guide them (the “air traffic controller”). The other students rearranged the furniture and added themselves as obstacles, and the controller had to direct the airplane across the room. It was so much fun! Especially when I put a rule in place to keep them from talking. Each student has a labeled bag of M&Ms, and every time they talk, I get to eat an M&M. At the end of the week, when we’re done with nonverbal improv, they get whatever candy is left. It’s a win-win situation! They’re quiet, and I get chocolate!

And also, my hair did not last like that for very long. Before my theatre arts class even started I had braided it all back. Too hot for fluffy long hair!

Fancy Pajamas!

9/6/12

This dress makes me feel like I’m wearing pajamas! I mean, fancy pajamas, but pajamas none the less. It’s so comfy I might die. I ended up wearing a cami under it because it was just a tad too low to wear as a teacher, but still. So comfy. It was one of my purchases in the Last Hurrah Sale on Modcloth, so I only paid $14.99 as opposed to $49.99. It’s more than worth it. It’s incredibly comfy, it’s great for the unpredictability of Nashville weather (pouring rain yesterday, 90 degrees and perfect today, what gives?), and I can layer it easily in the winter.

My hair was another day of “I just don’t curr.” Originally I had it in a pretty half-up fishtail, all fancy-like and Pinterest-y, but my hair was so unruly and frizzy that dutch braids it was!

I had another day of doing absolutely nothing at work. Seriously. With the high school students gone and not having aftercare, I went in and worked on show things for two hours, then went home and watched the X-Files. It was amazing. I felt like I was getting away with something.

Of course, now I remember I need to get my lesson plans together for next week. COME ON, CAITLIN. GET IT TOGETHER.

Also, these shoes are finally broken in. Awesome. Only took a year.

Awkward Turtle

9/5/12

I really need to learn how to pose properly. Maybe I’ll start doing all the cliche fashion blogger poses just so I can not look so awkward.

Anyways. I love this dress, poofiness and all. It’s a full gathered skirt with a full gathered underlayer, so it can be somewhat ginormous. All right, maybe not somewhat. Maybe really ginormous. But it’s cute, right?

Well, I at least paired it with heels, which gave me the somewhat ungainly look of a top-heavy flower on a too-skinny stem. But I was comfortable and I felt cute, and that’s all that matters, right?

The high school students are all on their beginning-of-the-year retreat, so I have very little to do right now. Today I just worked on things for the school play for two hours, then had aftercare with only the middle schoolers. So yeah. Quiet. I didn’t need to do much. But I still looked cute!

We’ll just ignore the “I don’t feel like caring today” ponytail.

I Might Be Obsessed With These Boots

8/31/12: I Might Be Obsessed With These Boots

I could wear these boots all the time. Seriously. Even though they make my feet look abnormally small. I just love them!

This is also probably my most favorite of all my Modcloth dresses. I bought it last year in the 70% off biannual sale- it’s my favorite time to shop on Modcloth. I initially bought it on a whim, but it turns out it flatters me a lot better than I thought it would. Plus it’s incredibly comfortable.

I wore this for a weird school day- there wasn’t a 7th period today, so I spent most of the day in the library working on the cast list for the fall show. I had forty kids audition and felt so bad that I couldn’t cast all of them! But there were only fifteen speaking parts, so…well, hopefully no one will come to me crying or angry on Tuesday.

After work I went to my friend Rachel’s house for an impromptu girl’s night. We had pasta with fresh veggies from her garden (I made the olive oil/fresh basil/fresh garlic sauce) and she made the best lemon poppyseed scones I’ve ever had. And we watched Newsies, which is seriously the best movie ever. All in all, the best way to start a three-day weekend!

No, I’m Not Hermes

8/29

I swear, every time I wear these shoes, someone cracks a Greek mythology joke. But do you know what? I don’t care. My shoes have polka dots and wings on them, and they are awesome.

I saw the shoes online in solid white and thought they were pretty as could be, but way out of my price range- Anne Hathaway wore them for an Oscars rehearsal, apparently. And then I happened upon them in Ross and snatched them up in a second. Thank goodness I have tiny tiny feet- these are size 5 1/2!

This skirt was one of my purchases in Modcloth’s last 70% off sale. It has elastic in the back, and it’s super comfy. And a good teacher-y length! They have the sale twice a year and they held it this week- so I’ve got two dresses, three pairs of leggings, and a pair of shoes coming my way.

It’s a little hard to see in this picture, but I matched my lip color to the pink polka dots on my shoes. I was so excited.

And then I stopped caring about things and put my hair in a ponytail.

YOLO.

Apparently This is My Come Hither Face

8/21/12: Apparently This is My Come Hither Face

I need to learn how to make better facial expressions. And poses that don’t involve hands on my hips. I might have to start doing cliche fashion blogger poses, just so I can change things up.

I won this dress in a cutthroat eBay auction and I’m so glad I did! It’s so comfortable and adorable- although it hikes halfway up my thighs when I sit down. But it’s so cute, I don’t mind wearing it with tights!

Although, speaking of which, my husband didn’t realize I was wearing tights. He just thought I had oompa-loompa legs. Thanks, husband.

I was going to wear this with a pair of yellow espadrille sandals, but I just got this pair of Blowfish Hamish boots and really, really wanted to wear them. It’s probably weird to wear boots and tights with a summer dress, but eh. It made me happy and it was comfortable!

Twelve Shades of Yellow

8/20/12: Twelve Shades of Yellow

In my husband’s words: “well, at least it’s not fifty shades of gray!”

Yeah, the yellows don’t necessarily match. But this dress was super comfy, and really nice for a hot day like today! Plus I had to move around a whole bunch (today was all about movement and expression on stage), and since there’s a smocked back and no zipper, I was very comfortable. I need to take the straps in a little, though.

And my hair did not last down for very long. It was up in a ponytail by 7th period. Oh, well. This was my second time trying the Miss Jessie’s curl cream from my last Birchbox- this time I let my hair air dry with my usual leave in conditioner, touched up the curls with an iron, and finished with the curl cream. As you can see…nice waves. No curls. And like I said…in a ponytail by 7th period. I’ll give it a couple more tries, but I’ll probably just use it as a finishing cream, and I don’t think I’ll buy more.

My lip color was a better success! I used the Pixi lip liner/lipstick in Peony, and  I really liked it. It was a great texture and a pretty decent shade, considering I didn’t pick it out myself, and it lasted for a good part of the day. If they have the same product in a red, I might give that a try.

Fancyboots

8/15/12 Outfit: Fancyboots

This conversation occurred as I was getting dressed this morning.

Me:: I’m going to wear my fancy boots today.

Sister: ….

Me: Someday I’m going to start a band and called it Fancyboots.

Of course, my sister reminded me that my band ought to be called Kissyboots, but you know.

These boots are amazing. Too bad I don’t know how to pose properly to show them off. They’re the Seychelles Romance boots in mushroom, and I am in love. The first time I wore them they rubbed a bit against the backs of my calves, but today they were perfect. They’re a little big- I went up a size like I usually do with boots, just because my giant calves have a tendency to interfere with normal boot-wearing- but nothing some thick socks can’t help with. Alas, they’re not very practical for crossing the road and steep driveway that divides my school’s campus, but it’s okay. My legs are short; I’m used to walking slow.

I have a crap-ton of Modcloth dresses, but this one probably gets the most wear. It’s super comfortable. I bought in their Labor Day sale back in 2010 and never regretted it. I mean, not that I ever regret Modcloth purchases- my bank account might, but I never do.

Hearts and Rainbows

8/7/12 Outfit: Hearts and Rainbows

I bought this dress a year ago when I first started working at my school! Today I wore it to teach about Shakespeare. Probably too much levity for the great Bard, but maybe he’d appreciate the fact that I accidentally matched the heart on my belt with the hearts on my sunglasses.

Or maybe not. He would probably declare me a brass-as-buttons wench for showing my bare gams. Or something like that.

Also, my hair is a hot mess. My bangs need trimmed, the length needs layers, and I really hate how the color turned out. It’s Garnier Nutrisse Pomegranate (True Red). It turned out more like…maroon on me. It’s been a week and the color has settled a bit, but it’s still just…way too…I don’t know.

I just want glorious copper locks. What dye will give me glorious copper locks?
